Error "Cannot connect to Tableau Public. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet"

When trying to open a file on Tableau Public in Tableau Desktop, the following error may occur:
Cannot connect to Tableau Public. Please make sure you are connected to the Internet. If you continue to receive this message, the server may be temporarily unavailable, please try again later.


  • Tableau Desktop 10.4.2 or later
  • Tableau Public
  • Windows with primary display language set to non-English (United States)


Try the following workaround: 
  1. Close Tableau Desktop
  2. Set English (United States) as the default language in Windows:
    • Select Windows start menu > Settings (gear icon) > Time & language > Region & language > English (United States) > Set as default
If that does not resolve the issue, change the date, time and number format in Windows to "English (United States)" as well.
