Error "Bad Connection ... InsertData: Unbound Column Unable to Properly Calculate the Domain For the Field"

Issue

When opening the data source tab of an unpackaged workbook (.twb) with a connection to Excel, the following error occurs:

Bad Connection: Tableau could not connect to the data source. InsertData: unbound column Unable to properly calculate the domain for the field '<Field Name>'. Displayed data may be incorrect

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2018.2.0
  • Windows 7
  • Excel

Resolution

  1. Create a copy of the Excel file. 
  2. Replace data source in your workbook and connect to the new file. 

Cause

The Excel file is corrupted.

Additional Information

Troubleshooting tests to verify if this article applies:
  • If the workbook is saved as a packaged workbook, the error does not occur.
  • Another workbook connected to the same Excel file has the same error
  • The error does not occur when connecting to a copy of the original Excel file.
