Published: 03 May 2019
Last Modified Date: 27 Feb 2020

Issue

When the backup is run with the tsm maintenance backup command, in command prompt or PowerShell progress, the following error might occur:

61% - Backing up object storage data failed

The Tableau Server installation and backup location is on non-default drive. Additionally, when checking the log files for the error, you can find these errors:

tabadmincontroller log:

2019-04-30 09:04:22.056 -0500  pool-14-thread-1 : ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.webapp.asyncjobs.AsyncJobService - Error running job 42 of type GenerateBackupJob java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.RuntimeException: java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.RuntimeException: BackupRestoreException(message:null)

tabadminagent log:

2019-04-24 09:35:33.688 -0500 pool-15-thread-5 : ERROR org.apache.thrift.server.TThreadPoolServer - Error occurred during processing of message. java.lang.RuntimeException: org.apache.thrift.TException: java.io.IOException: There is not enough space on the disk

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2018.2+

Resolution

Try one of the following workarounds:
  1. Check the disk space on C: drive and delete or remove unneeded files.
  2. Increase the disk space.
  3. Change Windows environment variables for TEMP and TMP folders to different drive. For more information see: How to Move Windows’ Temporary Folders to Another Drive

Cause

The backup file is too large and there is not enough space on C: drive for creation of temporary backup file.

Additional Information

Even with Tableau Server installed on non-default drive, temporary files will still get created and place in temporary directory based on environmental variable of TEMP and TMP which defaults to C: drive.
