When making a new connection to Salesforce Marketing Cloud from Tableau Desktop, the connection may fail with error code B19090E0 and the following message:

An error occurred while communicating with the Salesforce Marketing Cloud data source 'Salesforce Marketing Cloud'
Bad Connection: Tableau could not connect to the data source.
Error Code: B19090E0
For input string: ""
Unable to connect to the Salesforce Marketing Cloud server "Salesforce Marketing Cloud". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.
Connector Class: cdata_sfmarketingcloud, Version: 21.8272.0

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud connector

Salesforce Marketing Cloud requires further configuration to allow connection with Tableau.

Specifically, the "Enable Username and Password for Web Services" must be enabled by an Administrator in SFMC, per the extension gallery documentation for the Salesforce Marketing Cloud connector.

SFMC now enforces MFA to connect.

Additional Information

It may take a few attempts to properly show the new saved setting. If the setting does not appear correct after saving, please log out of SF, log back in, and check again.

Note that B19090E0 is a relatively common error code. An alternative issue for this error code with the same connector, with a very similar error message, exists in the following article from the Tableau Knowledge Base:
