Error "Authentication Failed" Signing In from Non-Default Domain Using SAML

When users from domains other than the default Tableau Server domain try to sign in to Tableau Server by entering their credentials in the SAML IdP page, the following error might occur:
Authentication Failed
Unable to Authenticate User.  Please try again or contact your administrator for assistance

For example, if Tableau Server is on the domain US and you have a second domain named GLOBAL:
  • Users from the US domain (US\username) have no issues, and authenticate successfully.
  • Users from the GLOBAL domain (GLOBAL\username) receive the Authentication Failed error.

  • Tableau Server 8.0 - 8.3
  • SAML
  • Active Directory
  • Multiple domains

  1. Upgrade to Tableau Server 8.1.6 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server in the Tableau Knowledge Base.
  2. Configure your IdP to send domain\username or username@domain to Tableau Server as the username attribute.

Tableau Server requires the domain\username or username@domain values for authentication.
