After you publish a workbook with an Rserve connection to Tableau Server, the following error might occur:

Tableau Server 9.3 and later:
TableauException: This RServe service does not support authentication. Try connecting without specifying a password.

Tableau Server 9.2 and earlier:
TableauException: An error occurred while communicating with the Rserve service.Tableau is unable to connect to the service. Verify that the service is running and that you have access privileges.

  • Tableau Server
  • RServe

Clear the Rserve username and password from the Tableau Server configuration:
  1. On the computer running Tableau Server, open the Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following command:
    • On a 32-bit computer, or with 64-bit Tableau Server installed: cd "C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\[version]\bin"
    • On a 64-bit computer, with 32-bit Tableau Server installed: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\[version]\bin"
  2. At the command prompt, run the following commands in order:
    • tabadmin stop
    • tabadmin set vizqlserver.rserve.username --default
    • tabadmin set vizqlserver.rserve.password --default
    • tabadmin configure
    • tabadmin start

The connection settings used by Tableau Server should match the connection settings used in Tableau Desktop (when Tableau Desktop is run on the Tableau Server computer). If no username or password is used in Tableau Desktop, but a username or password was specified in the Tableau Server connection, then errors will occur.
