When attempting to connect to MySQL from Tableau Cloud after the driver was upgraded to 8.0, the following error occurs:

[MySQL][ODBC 8.0(w) Driver]Access denied for user 'USER'@'IP_ADDRESS' (using password: YES)

  • Tableau Cloud
  • MySQL ODBC 8.0 Driver

Try the below workaround options.

Option 1: Republish the affected content from Tableau Desktop with version 8.0 of the MySQL driver with "Require SSL" enabled and specify the SSL certificate.

Option 2 Republish with SSLMODE=required or SSLMODE=preferred in odbc-connect-string-extras using a TDC file. See Customize and Tune ODBC Connections for more information.

Example customization using TDC:
<connection-customization class='mysql' enabled='true' version='2019.4'>
  <vendor name='mysql' />
  <driver name='mysql' />
      <customization name='odbc-connect-string-extras' value='SSLMODE=required'/>

Option 3: Work with your database administrator to assist with investigating the issue on the database. This may involve verifying the correct user permissions are provisioned and remote connections are configured. See Specifying Account NamesTroubleshooting Problems Connecting to MySQL and How to Fix Access Denied Errors in MySQL for more information.

Option 4: Use MySQL driver version 5.3 with Tableau Bridge. For more information see Expand Data Freshness Options by Using Tableau Bridge.

Option 5 : Ensure that Online pod IP addresses have been allowlisted as described in our Keep Data Fresh documentation.

Tableau Cloud's MySQL ODBC driver was upgraded from version 5.3 to 8.0 with the 2019.4 release.
