Issue

When publishing a live connection data source which connects to on premise MS SQL Server to Tableau Cloud from Tableau Desktop the following error can occur:

[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server] A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. accessible

Environment

  • Tableau Bridge 2023.3
  • MS SQL Server

Resolution

1) Create a named pool
2) Assign the Tableau Bridge client to that named pool.
3) Add the MS SQL Server server name or IP to the Private Network Allowlist and in that named pool.

Cause

Tableau Cloud cannot establish the live connection to the on-premise database via Tableau Bridge if the Tableau Bridge client is in the default pool.

Additional Information

For comparison,  it's possible to publish an extract data source which connects to on premise MS SQL Server to Tableau Cloud  from Tableau Desktop when Tableau Bridge client is in the default pool.
