Error "0x80070643 Fatal Error During Installation" When Installing Tableau Desktop

When installing Tableau Desktop the following error might occur:

0x80070643 Fatal error during installation
Additionally, the following error can be found in the logs: 

Error 0x80070643: Failed to execute MSI package



  • Tableau Desktop
  • Windows


Option 1

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. If this does not work, reinstall the most recent version of Tableau Desktop (the installation will uninstall and reinstall the software). You can download it here: Tableau Releases

Option 2

Work with your IT team to see if your operating system requires any updates. 

Option 3

Consider disabling firewall or antivirus software that may be conflicting with the installation. For more information, see Internet Access Requirements.

Option 4

  1. Extract the installer files from the Tableau Desktop installer .exe file. See Extract and run the Windows (MSI) installer.
  2. In Windows, navigate to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, and search for Visual C++ Redistributable packages that appear among the extracted installer files from step 1. For example, the Tableau Desktop 2018.2.3 installer .exe file contains the 2013 and 2014 x64 Visual C++ Redistributable packages (together with the .msi installer for Tableau Desktop and some database driver installer files).
  3. Uninstall these Visual C++ Redistributable packages using Programs and Features.
  4. Run the installers for the Visual C++ Redistributable packages that were extracted from the Tableau Desktop installer .exe file, followed by the .msi installer for Tableau Desktop.


A necessary installation component failed to start. 

Please note that error 0x80070643 is a Microsoft error.
