Error 0x80070643: Failed to execute MSI package when Installing or Uninstalling RMT Agent version 2022.1 on Tableau Server Nodes

Issue

When installing, upgrading, or uninstalling Tableau RMT Agent version 2022.1 on Tableau Server nodes, the following error message is seen: 

Error message for RMT Agent 2022.1 failed install/uninstall

In the logs for this installation failure, the following errors are present:

[2418:2414][2022-04-12T21:08:50]e000: Error 0x80070643: Failed to execute MSI package.
[20E8:0D58][2022-04-12T21:08:50]e000: Error 0x80070643: Failed to configure per-machine MSI package.
[20E8:0D58][2022-04-12T21:08:50]i319: Applied execute package: SERVER, result: 0x80070643, restart: None
[20E8:0D58][2022-04-12T21:08:50]e000: Error 0x80070643: Failed to execute MSI package.
When the user applies the workaround found in the following documentation, the issue is not resolved. The workaround in the following documentation is to update the GPO Policy, however this does not fix the issue being seen:

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2021.X
  • Windows Server
  • Tableau Resource Monitoring Tool Agent Version 2022.1 (20221.22.217.2341)

Resolution

The workaround for this issue is to use the Microsoft Windows Troubleshooter to fully uninstall the Tableau RMT Agent, then reinstall the Tableau RMT Agent on the machine. The following steps will assist with this process: 

1. Download the Microsoft Windows Troubleshooter: 

Microsoft Support - Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

2. Run the downloaded "MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall.meta.diagcab" program on the affected machine. Click "Next" to proceed.

3. The program will then detect for any issues and provide a selection for troubleshooting installs or uninstalls. Select ‘Uninstalling’

4. Search for the Tableau Resource Monitoring Tool Agent program in the provided list. Select and click Next.

5. The troubleshooter will finish and allow the program to be uninstalled from the Windows Add or Remove Programs.

6. Uninstall the Tableau Resource Monitoring Tool

7. With the RMT Agent uninstalled, the RMT Agent installer can be run again. This should allow the RMT Agent to fully install successfully. 

Cause

This is a known issue that is under investigation.
