Default Cities Recognized by Tableau

Published: 21 Jan 2013
Last Modified Date: 12 Dec 2019

Issue

You need a list of cities that Tableau recognizes by default.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

The GeocodingData.hyper or City.tds file contains a list of city names in the Tableau geocoding database.
  • 2019.4.0 and later on Windows, GeocodingData.hyper is used to recognize cities. The file is located by default at C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau [version]\Local\data.
  • 2018.3 and earlier on Windows, City.tds is used to recognize cities. The file is located by default at C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau [version]\Local\data or at C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau [version]\Local\data

Cause

City.tds was replaced by GeocodingData.hyper from Tableau Desktop 2019.4.
