Data engine consuming all available memory

When loading a simple workbook with embedded data sources, and using anti-virus or file scanning software, the view may fail to load with an infinite spinner.  Over time, Tableau Server gradually reaches 100% of memory being consumed by the data engine process. The following error can be found in the logs:
Error materializing temporary table: Tableau Data Engine Error: 306

  • Tableau Server
  • Windows 2012 R2
  • Qualys FIM or other anti-virus or security software

Disable anti-virus and security software or set exclusions to all Tableau Server installation directories.

Anti-virus software is preventing Tableau Server from renaming a temporary table or data engine file.

Additional Information

  • When testing the same dashboard or workbook in a new environment, the view renders fast.
  • In a clustered environment, if the data engine process reaches 100% on the primary, Tableau Server processes may require a restart before memory is released.
