Creating/Refreshing Oracle extracts take significantly longer in version 2020.2 and later

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.2
  • Windows Server
  • Oracle

Resolution

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop/Server 2021.1 or later.

As workaround use OCI driver below.

For Tableau Server:

https://www.tableau.com/en-gb/support/drivers
2. Select Oracle, Windows, and 64-bit.
3. Scroll all the way down the page till you see the section "Tableau Server: 2020.3".
4. Follow the instructions starting with "If you want to use the Oracle OCI driver instead...".
In step 2 of instructions use the following link to install the Windows 64-bit Oracle OCI driver for Tableau Server:
Tableau Server 2020.2: http://downloads.tableau.com/drivers/oracle/desktop/tableau2020.2-oracle-driver-x64.msi
Tableau Server 2020.3: http://downloads.tableau.com/drivers/oracle/desktop/tableau2020.3-oracle-driver-x64.msi
5. Make sure that  the Oracle JDBC driver (ojdbc8.jar) is not in the driver folder.

For Tableau Desktop 2020.2:
1. Run the installer that you download by following the above instructions.
2. Make sure that  the Oracle JDBC driver (ojdbc8.jar) is not in the driver folder.
