CMT migration of workbook fails with error "[ERR]: Invalid workbook file." if it contains non-English characters

When using Tableau Content Migration Tool to migrate workbooks which use non-English characters in the workbook name from Tableau Server, the migration fail with the following error.

Invalid workbook file.[File Size: 0B] One or more errors occurred preparing workbooks for migration. Stopping migration


  • Tableau Server 2023.1.2~2023.1.4
  • Tableau Server 2022.3.6~2022.3.8
  • Tableau Server 2022.1.14~2022.1.16
  • Tableau Server 2021.4.18~2021.4.20
  • Tableau Server 2021.3.23~2021.3.25
  • Tableau Content Migration Tool


Option 1
Upgrade to one of the following Tableau Server versions:

  • Tableau Server 2023.1.5 or newer version
  • Tableau Server 2022.3.9 or newer version
  • Tableau Server 2022.1.17 or newer version
  • Tableau Server 2021.4.21 or newer version
  • Tableau Server 2021.3.26 or newer version

Option 2
Remove/replacethe  non-English characters from workbook names.

Option 3
Download the impacted workbooks from Web browser and publish them via Tableau Desktop.


This is a known issue: W-13541386 that is under investigation.

Additional Information

A similar issue may also occur using REST API to download the workbooks which include non-English characters in the name. Download may fail with error "KeyError: 'content-disposition'".
