Issue

Cities designated by government ordinance of Japan are not displayed correctly using Geographic Roles. Only some wards are displayed or are not displayed at all.

  • Tableau Desktop 2018.2 or later

Resolution

Workaround 1: Create Territories on a Map

Please use one of the following methods to group the wards together and display them as a city.
  • Option 1: Select and group locations on a map
  • Option 2: Create a territory from a geographic field
  • Option 3: Geocode a territory field using another geographic field *Check the attached ordinance-designated_city.twbx to see the demonstrated option 3.

Workaround 2: Use external map data

Load and display external map data (spatial files) without using Tableau's geographic roles function.

Cause

By design, ordinance-designated cities are recognized and displayed by wards within the cities. e.g. Yokohama city, Sendai city.
