Calculations Relying on IFNULL Stop Working After Upgrading to Tableau Desktop 10.5

Published: 28 Jun 2018
Last Modified Date: 10 Aug 2018

Issue

After upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5, when connected to a shape file, nulls show as blank, breaking calculations that rely on the IFNULL() function

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10.5
  • Shape files

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2018.1.4 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop in Tableau Help.

Option 2

As a workaround, create a calculation following the pattern, "IIF([FIELD] == "", NULL, [FIELD])" where [FIELD] is any field you expect to contain NULLs. Use the calculation in place of the original field.

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue with ID 791255 which has been fixed in a recent release of Tableau Desktop.
