Blank Tableau Server Sign In Dialog When Using Self-Signed Certificate

Published: 27 Jun 2019
Last Modified Date: 25 Nov 2019

Issue

When trying to sign in to Tableau Server from Tableau Prep Builder, the Tableau Server Sign In dialog is blank.

Environment

  • Tableau Prep Builder 2018.3.3 and newer
  • Tableau Server using self-signed SSL certificate

Resolution

Use one of the following workarounds to publish the output as a data source to Tableau Server:

Option 1

Replace the self-signed certificate with a trusted certificate.

Option 2

Instead of publishing the data sources directly to Tableau Server, create the extract files and then publish them using Tableau Desktop. For more information, see:

Option 3

If using a self-signed certificate, ensure that the certificate contains subject alternate names. For instructions on creating such a certificate, see How to Create a Self-Signed SAN Certificate Using OpenSSL on a NetScaler Appliance

Cause

The Chromium component of Tableau Prep Builder 2018.3.3 and newer only uses the subjectAlternativeName extension (not commonName) to match the domain name and site certificate.
