Issue

After adding more cores and memory to the OS, and increasing the number of backgrounder processes using Tableau Server Configuration, the number of vizqlserver processes also seem to change automatically.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2018.1
  • Windows Server 2016 Standard

Resolution

After adding memory and increasing the number of cores and backgrounder processes using Tableau Server Configuration, make sure to check that the number of all of the processes, including the vizql processes, is what you expect. If not, change it manually.

Cause

The number of vizqlserver process will not change on Tableau Server, but the number of vizqlserver processes showing in the Tableau Server Configuration will change based on the number of CPU cores.

If you launch Tableau Server Configuration and apply changes to some of the  processes, changes to vizqlserver will also be applied automatically and need to be adjusted.

Additional Information

Example:

Before increasing the number of processes using Tableau Server Configuration:
  •   Number of processors is 8. Default value for vizqlserver processes has been calculated as 2.
After increasing the number of processes using Tableau Server Configuration:
  •   Number of processors is 12. Default value for vizqlserver processes has been calculated as 3.
