When Site Saml Enabled, Tableau Server Still Prompts For Username

Issue

When Tableau Server is enabled with Site SAML SSO, user is prompted for username when accessing Tableau Server even if Server-wide SAML is also configured and enabled.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Site SAML

Resolution

One option to avoid the initial prompt for username would be to go to the Identity Provide (IdP) portal and authenticate there. You will still have to provide username and password with the IdP before getting authenticated to Tableau Server.

Cause

When Tableau Server is configured with Site-specific SAML, Service Provider (Tableau Server) initiated authentication will prompt for username to determine whether to use default auth (either local or Server-wide SAML) or Site-specific SAML. If Site-specific SAML is configured for that user, Tableau then looks at which site and which SAML Identity Provider (IdP) to select for sending the AuthNRequest to initiate the SAML flow.
