When trying to connect to a Google Sheets spreadsheet saved to a Google shared drives (Team Drive), the following error occurs:
The URL you entered is invalid or points to a Spreadsheet you don't have permission to view

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Google Sheets
  • Google shared drives (Team Drive)

Resolution

Use the following workaround:
  1. Create a new Google Sheets spreadsheet in My Drive in Google Drive.
  2. Use the IMPORTRANGE function to reference the spreadsheet in shared drives (Team Drive).
  3. Connect Tableau Desktop to the Google Sheets spreadsheet located in My Drive, which will reflect any changes made to the original shared drives (Team Drive) spreadsheet. For more information, see Google Sheets.

Cause

Tableau's Google Sheets connector can currently only connect to spreadsheets stored in a personal drive.
