Issue

When trying to edit the relationship with a custom SQL the pop-up window does not show up, instead, there is the error message
"Unable to complete the action. Internal error - An unexpected error occurred and the operation could not be completed. Error: 6EA18A9E"
This issue occurs only when adding the second table in the canvas. Running this query as 1st table will retrieve table content without error.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2020.2
  • Windows 10
  • Google BigQuery
  • Presence of nested table

Resolution

Check the custom SQL for any nested table or arrays.

Example:
Correct Query
SELECT `github_nested`.`created_at` AS `created_at`,
  `github_nested`.`public` AS `public`,
  `github_nested`.`actor` AS `actor`,
  `github_nested`.`url` AS `url`,
  `github_nested`.`type` AS `type`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`url` AS `repository_url`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`has_downloads` AS `repository_has_downloads`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`created_at` AS `repository_created_at`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`has_issues` AS `repository_has_issues`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`description` AS `repository_description`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`forks` AS `repository_forks`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`fork` AS `repository_fork`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`has_wiki` AS `repository_has_wiki`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`homepage` AS `repository_homepage`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`integrate_branch` AS `repository_integrate_branch`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`master_branch` AS `repository_master_branch`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`size` AS `repository_size`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`private` AS `repository_private`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`name` AS `repository_name`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`organization` AS `repository_organization`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`owner` AS `repository_owner`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`open_issues` AS `repository_open_issues`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`watchers` AS `repository_watchers`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`pushed_at` AS `repository_pushed_at`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`language` AS `repository_language`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`blog` AS `actor_attributes_blog`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`company` AS `actor_attributes_company`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`email` AS `actor_attributes_email`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`gravatar_id` AS `actor_attributes_gravatar_id`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`location` AS `actor_attributes_location`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`login` AS `actor_attributes_login`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`name` AS `actor_attributes_name`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`type` AS `actor_attributes_type`
FROM `publicdata.samples`.`github_nested` `github_nested`

Wrong Query - that does not give any error when running first and does not show anything after "type" and before "repository_url" when loading the table data
SELECT `github_nested`.`created_at` AS `created_at`,
  `github_nested`.`public` AS `public`,
  `github_nested`.`actor` AS `actor`,
  `github_nested`.`url` AS `url`,
  `github_nested`.`type` AS `type`,

  `github_nested`.`repository`,

  `github_nested`.`repository`.`url` AS `repository_url`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`has_downloads` AS `repository_has_downloads`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`created_at` AS `repository_created_at`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`has_issues` AS `repository_has_issues`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`description` AS `repository_description`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`forks` AS `repository_forks`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`fork` AS `repository_fork`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`has_wiki` AS `repository_has_wiki`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`homepage` AS `repository_homepage`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`integrate_branch` AS `repository_integrate_branch`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`master_branch` AS `repository_master_branch`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`size` AS `repository_size`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`private` AS `repository_private`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`name` AS `repository_name`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`organization` AS `repository_organization`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`owner` AS `repository_owner`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`open_issues` AS `repository_open_issues`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`watchers` AS `repository_watchers`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`pushed_at` AS `repository_pushed_at`,
  `github_nested`.`repository`.`language` AS `repository_language`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`blog` AS `actor_attributes_blog`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`company` AS `actor_attributes_company`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`email` AS `actor_attributes_email`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`gravatar_id` AS `actor_attributes_gravatar_id`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`location` AS `actor_attributes_location`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`login` AS `actor_attributes_login`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`name` AS `actor_attributes_name`,
  `github_nested`.`actor_attributes`.`type` AS `actor_attributes_type`
FROM `publicdata.samples`.`github_nested` `github_nested`

Cause

Seems to be related to nested tables
