Error "Unable to access OData URL with server response 401 Unauthorized" after upgrade to 2020.2.x

Issue

After upgrading to Tableau Desktop or Tableau Server 2020.2 or newer, OData connections that had worked in previous versions begin returning the following error:
"Unable to access OData URL (https://example.com) with server response 401 Unauthorized"

The error may be returned even when "No Authentication" is selected.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.2
  • Tableau Desktop 2020.2

Resolution

Option 1

Use Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server 2020.1.x or earlier.

Option 2

Upgrade Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server to 2020.2.9, 2020.3.4, or newer.

Note: Upgrading Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server will only resolve the issue for OData V2 URLs. Tableau Development is still in the process of adding support for OData V3 and V4 URLs that employ NTLM authentication.

Cause

Starting with version 2020.2, Tableau employs a Java based OData connector that initially did not include the ability to employ NTLM authentication.
