Issue

In Tableau Online, some extracts for Google BigQuery might fail to be refreshed when using Custom SQL.
in Background Tasks for Extracts view, the following error message shows in the details about a task.

The Google BigQuery service was unable to compile the query. Unrecognized name: `CustomSQLQueryName`; Did you mean `CustomSQLQueryName.sql`? at [1:8]

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Google BigQuery

Resolution

  1. Remove any periods (".") from the custom SQL query's name that displays on the Canvas of the data source page.
  2. Republish the data source to Tableau Server.
Alternatively, upgrading to Tableau Server to 2019.4.5, 2020.1.2, or higher versions. 

Cause

This behavior is related to Google BigQuery, and is fixed in more recent versions of Tableau Server.
