Issue

Tableau Resource Monitoring Tool 2020.2 fails to install with error:

Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation

Error message presented by RMT installer.

Environment

  • Tableau Resource Monitoring Tool 2020.2.0
  • Windows Server

Resolution

Option 1
Temporarily unmount/disable the Dynamic Disk drive to install RMT and then remount.
Disable the dynamic disk in Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Disk Drives. Making sure to check the Volumes tab to confirm it is the correct disk.  Complete the install and then re-enable the disk again in Device Manager. (This will only work for a disk that isn't the primary)

Environments may vary and IT could be involved to assist in this process for prevention of data loss.

Option 2
Convert Dynamic Disks to Basic and then run the installation again:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/change-a-dynamic-disk-back-to-a-basic-disk

Cause

A new script added to Resource Monitoring Tool 2020.2, tunePostgres, runs the Get-Disk command which does not recognize Dynamic Disks and causes the error.  This script is run after the initdb sequence within the installation of Resource Monitoring Tool for the postgres_binaries.msi.
