Tableau Mac Software Does Not Yet Support Apple Silicon CPU With M1 Chip

Published: 30 Sep 2020
Last Modified Date: 26 Feb 2021

Issue

Attempting to install current Tableau Mac products on a Mac with an Apple silicon CPU will fail with an error: "Your computer's processor doesn't meet the minimum requirements That Tableau requires to install the software. To view the minimum requirements, see https://www.tableau.com/en-us/products/techspecs."

Environment

  • Versions 2020.4, 2020.4.1 of Tableau Desktop, Prep Builder, Reader and Public Desktop
  • Macs with M1 processors

Resolution

Versions 2020.2.x, 2020.3.x and 2020.4.2 and later of Tableau Desktop, Prep Builder, Reader and Public Desktop will install correctly but are not officially supported.

We are actively working on officially supporting Desktop, Reader, Prep and Public Desktop on Apple devices with M1 processors and will be providing updates in Tableau Community as we have them.

Cause

Versions 2020.4 and 2020.4.1 block installation of Tableau products on Macs with M1 processors due to issues found in testing pre-release versions of Apple Silicon. These issues are no longer observed with the released M1 processors so we are removing the installation block on 2020.4.2 and later.
