Issue

When refreshing an extract on Server, an error is occurring stating:

DataServiceFailure There was an error with the data source xx. Verify that the data source is configured correctly.
Note: The Test connection to the data source succeeds.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Windows Server 2012

Resolution

  1. Download the published workbook and open in Tableau Desktop
  2. Navigate to the Data source Tab, and check, if prompt to Tableau Server sign in appears ( denoting that the extract was created from a Server published data source)
  3. Add a new copy of data source to the workbook, and create the extract.
  4. Replace the existing connection, to refer to the newly created extract
  5. Closed the old corrupted data source.
  6. Re-Publish the workbook, with the new extracted data source.

Cause

The embedded extract, is created by extracting a published data source, which does not exist any more. So the extract needs to be created by referring to the actual data source ( SQL Server in this case)
