Linux Secure Log Shows Error For A Successful Tsm Login

Issue

A successful tsm login using local linux account would cause error entries in linux secure log below.
User1 below is a local linux account in tsmadmin group.

Jan 21 09:26:28 ip-10-177-41-187 unix_chkpwd[14780]: check pass; user unknown
Jan 21 09:26:28 ip-10-177-41-187 unix_chkpwd[14781]: check pass; user unknown
Jan 21 09:26:28 ip-10-177-41-187 unix_chkpwd[14781]: password check failed for user (user1)
Jan 21 09:26:28 ip-10-177-41-187 tabadmincontroller: pam_unix(login:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=995 euid=995 tty= ruser= rhost=  user=user1
Jan 21 09:26:30 ip-10-177-41-187 su: pam_unix(su:session): session opened for user user1 by (uid=995)
Jan 21 09:26:30 ip-10-177-41-187 su: pam_unix(su:session): session closed for user user1

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.2.6 on CentOS 7
  • Tableau Server 2019.4 on Redhat 7

Resolution

The error is benign and no action is required for Tableau Server. 
 

Cause

The error is generated from pam_unix module on the OS and not from Tableau.
