Issue

When connecting to a Hortonworks Hadoop Hive database using Kerberos authentication, the following error may occur:
[Hortonworks][ThriftExtension] (9) Error occurred while authenticating via SASL. Error details: SASL(-1): generic failure: GSSAPI Error: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information (Internal credentials cache error)

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Windows
  • Hortonworks Hadoop Hive
  • Microsoft Kerberos

Resolution

Apply the UseOnlySSPI=1 customization to the connection using a .tdc file, to specify that the driver uses the SSPI plugin to handle Kerberos authentication. A sample .tdc file is attached to this article.

Cause

The ODBC driver was not able to access the correct internal credentials cache using the gssapi library.

Additional Information

If the connection still fails, confirm that the connection details are correct. Refer to the driver user guide in the driver installation folder, and contact your Hive server administrator as needed.
