Google Bigquery Extracts Are Up To 4 Times Slower To Create And Refresh After Upgrade

Published: 14 Jul 2020
Last Modified Date: 15 Jul 2020

Issue

When attempting to create or refresh an extract from Google BigQuery, it can take up to 4 times as long in 2020.2.2 and newer compared to 2020.2.1.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2020.2.2
  • Tableau Server 2020.2.2 & 2020.2.3
  • Google BigQuery

Resolution

As a workaround, please consider the following:

Tableau Desktop

Use version 2020.2.1 or earlier to create or refresh Google BigQuery extracts.

Tableau Server

If Google BigQuery extracts are failing to refresh, increase the value for the backgrounder.querylimit parameter. See the knowledge base article Extract failed to complete in 7200 seconds for instructions on how to do this.

Rolling Tableau Server back to version 2020.1.6, 2019.4.9, 2019.3.10, or earlier will also all workaround the issue.

Cause

This is a known issue that is currently being investigated by Tableau Development.
