Issue

When executing a migration plan using the Content Migration Tool Console Runner, the following error may occur:

The encryption key is not valid for the specified file. Update the encryption key from the CMT Settings page, or use the tabcmt-runner encryption CLI command to specify the key.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Content Migration Tool 2019.3 - 2020.2

Resolution

As a workaround, update the Content Migration Tool Console Runner encryption key using the steps below:

Copy the Content Migration Tool editor (tabcmt-editor.exe) encryption key.
1.      Open the Content Migration Tool.
2.      Go to Help > Settings...
3.      Copy the Encryption Key value.
4.      Click Cancel to exit the Settings page.
5.      Close the Content Migration Tool.

Update the Content Migration Tool Console Runner (tabcmt-runner.exe) encryption key.
1.      Open a Command Prompt window.
2.      Navigate to the Tableau Content Migration Tool directory.
cd /d "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Tableau\Tableau Content Migration Tool"
3.      Execute the following command to update the Console Runner encryption key:
             tabcmt-runner encryption <Encryption Key Value>

Replace <Encryption Key Value> with the encryption key value you copied in Step 3 of the previous section. For example:

             tabcmt-runner encryption 2A9wYvWjJnBw4LGmTdRZJWeDN2/pUyYtHeDL6LKVMtw=
