Error "Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost" When Refreshing Snowflake Extract

Issue

When refreshing an extract on Tableau Server, the extract might fail with the following error:

Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.2.4

Resolution

Check Snowflake ODBC driver version and if it is 2.22.1 or 2.22.4 uninstall it and install older version such as 2.16.
 

Additional Information

Note:
  • Tableau Server can successfully connect to Snowflake
  • Refresh for small data set works successfully. The issue happens when large data set is refreshed.
  • The issue does not happen in Tableau Desktop
