Duplicate Workbook Names Are Created Instead Of Overwriting An Existing Workbook

Issue

Sometimes a duplicate workbook names appear to be created in the same project upon republishing a workbook with the same name and not overwritten on Tableau Server or Tableau Online. A new workbook is published with the same name within the same project.

Example:

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Online

Resolution

Make sure that the workbook names really match, including the entered spaces.

Cause

  • If the workbook name contains spaces, Tableau Server/Tableau Online will consider it as a separate workbook then save it.
  • Since the workbook name in the project is in the form of a trim, it may look the "same". However, when accessing a view and look at the <workbook> attribute in the URL, some numbers may have been added at the end of the workbook name. This behavior is by design.
