Characters with Umlauts Displayed Incorrectly With HP Vertica Data Source

When connecting to HP Vertica from Tableau Desktop, characters with umlauts (also known as diaresis or trema) are not being displayed correctly.

Ensure that the source files loaded into HP Vertica are UTF-8 encoded.


HP Vertica drivers read UTF-8 by default.

Additional Information

This issue may appear in Tableau Desktop when source files are ISO_8859-1 encoded.
Though ISO_8859-1 and UTF-8 are similar, UTF-8 is a multibyte encoding that can represent any Unicode character. ISO 8859-1 is a single-byte encoding that can represent the first 256 Unicode characters. Both encode ASCII exactly the same way.
