Issue

Ask Data in one node in a multi node environment is down

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.1.4

Resolution

Confirm that nodes can reach each other. For example in a 3 node environment, if ask data in node 3 is down, check if the hostname of affected node can be reached from other nodes. Make sure the hostnames are resolved to correct IP addresses.

This can be achieved by running “ping <affectednodehostname>” or run "nlslookup <affectednodehostname>" from other nodes

If it cannot be reached, check host file located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder and add the missed hostname with its ip address to this file. For example if node tableaunode3 with ip 10.135.165.15  is affected add the following entry:

10.135.165.15 tableaunode3

Cause

Nodes cannot communicate each other with the IP/hostname assigned.

Additional Information

The error in elasticsearch.log file shows the failure communication to the affected node:
[2021-02-08T13:25:11,709][WARN ][o.e.d.z.UnicastZenPing ] [NLTFYJD] failed to resolve host [tableaunode3]
java.net.UnknownHostException: tableaunode3
