After Enabling Tableau Catalog, Disk Space Usage Increasing Tremendously

Published: 14 Mar 2020
Last Modified Date: 11 Aug 2020

Issue

After enabling Tableau Catalog, disk space usage increases tremendously. Huge csv files (postgresql-<day of week>.csv) are being accumulated in PostgreSQL database logs folder, which may cause running out of disk space.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.1
  • Tableau Server 2019.4
  • Tableau Server 2019.3

Resolution

Upgrade to Tableau Server 2019.4.10, 2020.1.7, 2020.2.4

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue with ID 1022313, which has been corrected in more recent versions of Tableau Server.

Additional Information

  • Manually deleting postgresql-<day of week>.csv does not affect Tableau Server processes and data.
  • postgresql-<day of week>.csv does not include indexed metadata. It is the log of PostgreSQL database for error reporting and logging. It can be useful for gathering statistics in high-load installations, but usually no need for keeping it.
