When creating a workbook connected to a published data source on Tableau Server with a live connection, you expect to download a .twb file, when downloading from Tableau Server after publishing. Why are you getting a .twbx file instead in some cases?

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Desktop

Unpack the downloaded .twbx file and check if there is an image file inside.

Additional Information

Generally, after creating and publishing a workbook which is connected to a published data source on Tableau Server with a live connection, you expect to download a .twb file when you download from Tableau Server. However, if the workbook contains background images, custom geo-coding, custom shapes and certain other files, the workbook will be saved as a .twbx file despite not have a packaged data source.
