How to Publish an Empty Extract and make it fully Refresh after publishing, because the database is huge and it will take long time to download locally and then publish the data source again to the server

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Desktop
  • Data Extract

At the moment, this is not a feature in the Product. However, there is a possible workaround:

Another way to publish en empty extract is:
  1. Create a view in a Relational Database. Suppose your original table is mytable
  2. Define the view as SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE 1=0
  3. Connect to the view in Tableau Desktop
  4. Create an empty extract in Tableau Desktop
  5. Publish it to Tableau Server
  6. Remove WHERE 1=0 from the view
  7. Refresh the extract in Tableau Server
Furthermore, if you are publishing an extract to Tableau Cloud, here are the tips to overcome 7200 seconds timeout.
e.g. If the data contains FY=2018, 2019, 2020, run the first task with WHERE FY=2018, run the second task with WHERE FY=2019, etc.
