Question

How to disable the embedded password authentication type for a specific data source?
As an administrator, I would like to restrict publishers to select only "Prompt user" for a particular data source to prevent others from accidentally viewing data with embedded passwords.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Online

Answer

The ability to disable the embedded password authentication type for a particular data source is not built into the product. Potential workarounds are:

Workaround 1:
After a particular data source has been published, change its owner to an admin user, etc., to consolidate its ownership.
Changing the ownership of the content will remove the existing embedded password. For related information see Considerations for changing content ownership.

Workaround 2:
Limit the number of users who can publish data sources and prohibit the "Embedded password" in the operation management.

Workaround 3:
For Tableau Server, if it is acceptable to apply it to all data sources, disable "Embedded Credentials in Content" in the server settings. For more information see Let users embed credentials (or not).

Additional Information

In Tableau Server, the ability to restrict the selection of Embedded is done at the server level currently,
In Tableau Online, the ability to select an Embedded password is enabled by default.
