Question

Unable to map geospatial components when working with geospatial data stored in a Esri database (PostgreSQL)  after connecting to the data source.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10.3.2
  • Windows 10
  • PostgreSQL

Answer

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2019.2 or later versions. See Tableau Desktop Downloads and Release Notes for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Desktop. For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop and Desktop Upgrade.

Option 2

Try the following workaround:
  1. Use shape files and the spatial file connection (as of Tableau Desktop 10.2). However please note that the Postgres spatial data needs to be converted to shape files each time the map is updated.
  2. An alternative workaround would be to use custom polygons. Note: this method produces large files which may be unacceptable for some situations.

Additional Information

The functionality to connect directly to PostgreSQL geometry data was added to Tableau Desktop 2019.2.
