Question

Does disabling the Windows Print Spooler service affect Tableau Server?

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Windows

Answer

Since Tableau Server is not printing to a printer and is not using the Windows Print Spooler service, stopping Windows Print Spooler will not affect the running Tableau Server.

Additional Information

Disabling the Windows Print Spooler service will likely have an impact on print jobs, but not on Tableau Server. This service is responsible for managing print jobs getting sent to the printer client or print server. It allows users to delete print jobs that are in process and to manage print jobs that are currently waiting to be printed. For more information, see Print Spooler Service (Microsoft).

Microsoft announced the Windows Print Spooler vulnerability (CVE-2021-34527) on Jul 1, 2021 (US time), provided the following workarounds. For more information, see Windows Print Spooler Remote Code Execution Vulnerability CVE-2021-34527.
  • Disable the Print Spooler service.
  • Use Group Policy to disable inbound remote printing.
Microsoft released security updates. Before installing these updates, please stop Tableau Server at first. For more information, see Applying Windows Updates to Tableau Server.
