Question

When using a virtual deployment, you may get a warning message that your license information has changed whenever you launch a new VM for Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder.

It is possible to remove the warning message and go straight to the license authentication window.  The warning message displays as follows:

License Has Changed
Tableau had detected that the license on your system has changed.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Windows
  • Virtual Environment
  • Virtual Desktop Support

Answer

This warning occurs because the ATR service sends a new token for the new VM that doesn’t match the license cache.
There are special Virtual Desktop flags that should be used for the best end user experience when building the initial Tableau Desktop installation that will be used to publish to VMs.  The installer flags are as follows:    SYNCHRONOUSLICENSECHECK and SILENTLYREGISTERUSER.

Option 1: Activate with Product Key
Step 1. Download your Tableau Desktop installer from the following site.
https://www.tableau.com/support/releases

Step 2. Start a Windows command prompt, navigate to the download folder, and then execute the following command line to install (or re-install) Tableau Desktop.  The example below will set the VMs to use the ATR service for Virtual Desktop, allow for a product key activation, sets a low activation duration to avoid maximum activation errors, and stops the message that the license has changed:
e.g.: TableauDesktop-64bit-2022-3-0.exe /quiet /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1  ATRENABLED=1 ATRREQUESTEDDURATIONSECONDS=43200 SYNCHRONOUSLICENSECHECK="true"  SILENTLYREGISTERUSER="true"

Option 2: Activate with LBLM
Step 1. Download your Tableau Desktop installer from the following site.
https://www.tableau.com/support/releases

Step 2. Start a Windows command prompt, navigate to the download folder, and then execute the following command line to install (or re-install) Tableau Desktop for a virtual deployment:
e.g.: TableauDesktop-64bit-2022-3-0.exe /quiet /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1 ATRREQUESTEDDURATIONSECONDS=43200 ACTIVATIONSERVER=http://<tableau_server_url>  SYNCHRONOUSLICENSECHECK="true"  SILENTYLYREGISTERUSER="true"
