Question

How to customize the maximum number of physical connections Tableau Server can make to a database.

Environment

Tableau Server

Answer

The max number of physical database connections may be changed by running one of the following commands:

Versions 2018.2 and newer using TSM

tsm configuration set -k vizqlserver.protocolcachesize –v <number of connections desired>
tsm configuration set -k dataserver.protocolcachesize –v <number of connections desired>
tsm pending-changes apply

If receiving a warning regarding unknown configuration keys from tsm, append --force-keys flag.

Versions 2018.1 and older using Tabadmin

tabadmin stop
tabadmin set vizqlserver.protocolcachesize <number of connections desired>
tabadmin set dataserver.protocolcachesize <number of connections desired>
tabadmin config
tabadmin start
