Question

How to add borders around sheets on dashboards.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Answer

To add a border around a sheet, use a layout container.

For Tableau Desktop versions 10.3 and below:
  1. Create a new dashboard or update your existing dashboard.
  2. Drag a horizontal or vertical layout container to the dashboard.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow on the blank container and select Format Container.
  4. In the Format Container pane, add a border and customize as you see fit, and then close the pane.
  5. Then, place the desired sheet(s) into the container.
For Tableau Desktop versions 10.4 and above:
  1. Create a new dashboard or update your existing dashboard.
  2. Drag a horizontal or vertical layout container to the dashboard.
  3. Right click within a layout container and click "Select Layout Container"
  4. On the dashboard pane, Select "Layout" from the top menu
  5. Under Border, select the desired border formatting options.

To view a dashboard example that contains four sheets (and therefore, four layout containers), see the attached workbook 4Sheets square.tbwx. Please note that when formatting the sheets, you may need to adjust how the sheet fits a layout container (Standard, Entire View ect...).
