After Publishing A Workbook, Workbook URL Has Some Numbers Added

Question

Upon saving a workbook via web edit with the same workbook name that exists in another Project(s), some numbers are added at the end of the workbook name/URL. Why does this happen?

For example:
https://online.tableau.com/#/site/xxxxx/views/test/overview
is saved as:
https://online.tableau.com/#/site/xxxxx/views/test_13448375344832/overview

Environment

  • Tableau Online
  • Tableau Server
  • Windows 10
  • Oracle

Answer

To avoid the conflict in URLs, Tableau adds some numbers at the end of the workbook's URL if there is already a workbook with the same name in another Project within the same Site on Tableau Server or Tableau Online. The name of the workbook needs to be unique within a site.

To reset/resolve the URL with numbers added, remove all the workbooks with the same name and republish them with unique name for each workbook.
