Tableau Server Unexpectedly Unlicensed on Linux When Not Using ATR Activation

Published: 18 Dec 2021
Last Modified Date: 28 Jun 2023

Issue

Tableau Server can become unexpectedly unlicensed when not installed with the ATR activation service but when using the legacy Flexera activation method.  The unlicensed state can occur randomly or when there is a reboot of the VM or hardware.  The error is often shown in the logs as follows:

tablicsvr.log:
Tableau Vendor exited DUE TO SIGNAL 36 Exit reason 4
(tableau) No features to serve, exiting
(tableau) EXITING DUE TO SIGNAL 36 Exit reason 4
(lmgrd) tableau exited with status 36 (No features to serve)

Environment

Linux
Flexera activation (not ATR)
Tableau Server 2020.4 - 2023.1

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Server versions 2023.1.3+, 2022.3.7+, or 2022.1.15+

Option 2

Option 3

Repair the license data storage if applicable:

  1. Run the following from the command line to view the license data as follows:
    serveractutil -view > license_data.txt

In some cases the command will hang or produce no output, in this case, skip this Option.

  2. Identify any broken fulfillments by finding this text:
    Trust Flags: **BROKEN** RESTORE
     Fulfillment Type: PUBLISHER ACTIVATION

  3. Repair each broken fulfillment found by running the command for each FID (fullfillmentID):
    serveractutil -repair <fulfillmentID>
