Error Code 6EA18A9E When Replacing a Published Data Source in Tableau Desktop

Issue

The error below is encountered in Tableau Desktop when replacing a published data source (Tableau Cloud) by its local copy in an existing workbook:
 
"Internal Error - An unexpected error occurred and the operation could not be completed.
Error Code: 6EA18A9E"

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2021.4.1 - 2021.4.3
  • Windows
  • Mac

Resolution

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2021.4.4 or newer. 
 

Cause

This is a known issue that was resolved in ID 1365139 in Tableau Desktop 2021.4.4 and newer.
 

Additional Information

Workaround if not able to upgrade:
Option 1
  1. Open the affected workbook in Tableau Desktop.
  2. Add the replacement data source to the workbook.
  3. Add a new worksheet to the workbook.
  4. In the newly-created worksheet, right-click the original data source > Replace Data Source.
  5. Navigate back to an existing worksheet or dashboard .
  6. Right-click > close the original Data Source.
  7. If needed, delete the worksheet added in step 2.
