Activating Tableau Desktop via LBLM, the pop-up browser authentication page is covered by the activation dialog

Issue

When activating Tableau Desktop via LBLM, the pop-up browser authentication page can be covered by the activation dialog menu.  If the display screen is small (e.g 13 inch), then it is difficult to adjust the browser size and location of this pop up in order to complete the authentication.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2021.4 and newer
  • Tableau Server 2021.4 and newer

Resolution

The workaround is to disable the default use of external browser in Tableau Desktop to handle the Tableau Server authentication process.  

On Tableau Server instance, open the Command Prompt and perform the following:
  1.  tsm configuration set -k wgserver.authentication.desktop_externalbrowser -v false
  2. tsm pending-changes apply 
Note:  The "pending-changes apply" will restart Tableau Server.
