Error "0x80070643 Fatal Error During Installation" When Installing Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep

Issue

When installing Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder, one of the following errors might occur:

0x80070643 Fatal error during installation

Set-up Failed
One or more issues caused the set-up to fail. Please fix the issues and then retry set-up. For more information see the log file.

Additionally, the following error can be found in the logs:

Error 0x80070643: Failed to execute MSI package

Environment

Tableau Desktop
Tableau Prep Builder
Windows

Resolution

Option 1

Review the Tableau Technical Specifications to ensure the correct level of the operating system is being used. For example, 32-bit is not supported.

Option 2

Restart the computer.
If this does not work, reinstall the most recent version of Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder (the installation will uninstall and reinstall the software). You can download it here: Tableau Releases

Option 3

Work with your IT team to see if your operating system requires any updates.

Option 4

Consider disabling firewall or antivirus software that may be conflicting with the installation. For more information, see Internet Access Requirements.

Option 5 - for Tableau Desktop

Extract the installer files from the Tableau Desktop installer .exe file. See Extract and run the Windows (MSI) installer.
In Windows, navigate to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, and search for Visual C++ Redistributable packages that appear among the extracted installer files from step 1. For example, the Tableau Desktop 2018.2.3 installer .exe file contains the 2013 and 2014 x64 Visual C++ Redistributable packages (together with the .msi installer for Tableau Desktop and some database driver installer files).
Uninstall these Visual C++ Redistributable packages using Programs and Features.
Run the installers for the Visual C++ Redistributable packages that were extracted from the Tableau Desktop installer .exe file, followed by the .msi installer for Tableau Desktop.

Cause

A necessary installation component failed to start, usually the C++ libraries, or an invalid OS version was used.

Please note that error 0x80070643 is a Microsoft error.

Additional information

Some customers have been successful installing Tableau Desktop after using the Microsoft Troubleshooter that fixes problems that block programs from being installed or removed.
