Issue

When you try to open a workbook that uses a Microsoft Excel data source, the following error occurs:

An error occurred while communicating with the data source.
Errors occurred while loading the data source.
Unable to properly calculate the domain for the field '<field>'. Displayed data may be incorrect.

Environment

Tableau Desktop
Windows
Excel

Resolution

Option 1

Open the Excel file in Microsoft Excel.
If it opens in Protected View, click the Enable Editing button, then save the file.

Option 2

If the file is not in Protected view, the Excel file may be corrupt. Follow the steps in the article to replace the data source.

Error "Bad Connection ... InsertData: Unbound Column Unable to Properly Calculate the Domain For the Field"

Cause

The Excel file was in protected view.
