Issue

After connecting Tableau Desktop to Amazon Athena, the following error message might occur appears:

com.tableausoftware.jdbc.TableauJDBCException:
There was a Java error
Unable to connect to the server “athena.[region].amazonaws.com”. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Resolution

Option 1

Work with your IT team to confirm that the AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Console is set to the most up-to-date policy..

Option 2

A similar error will also occur when not using the correct version of Java with their driver on Mac OSX. Newest Java version can be downloaded here: Java SE Runtime Environment Downloads
